Biography
Dr. Bailey is an associate professor of pediatrics at The Ohio State University, and is a principal investigator within the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis at the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He has made important contributions to the field of psychoneuroimmunology and to studies involving the Brain-Gut-Microbiota Axis. His research is focused on the role of the gut microbiota in maintaining health or exacerbating disease during stressful periods. He is particularly interested in understanding how commensal gut microbes can enhance inflammatory responses in the intestines, as well as in systemic sites such as the spleen and the brain. His goal is to leverage this understanding to help to develop nutritional (e.g., prebiotic) or bacterial (e.g., probiotic) therapies to prevent the deleterious effects of stress on inflammatory diseases.
